From left: Dino Ciccone, pizzeria owner and motorcycle freak, and John Brescio, owner of Lombardi’s. I didn’t ask, but I hope Dino didn’t ride that bike down from London, Ontario, where he lives and works.

Dino is building something he calls the "World Pizza Bike," a custom-built motorcycle that will pull a pizza trailer. From the plans I saw of it at the pizza show, it looks like a pizza-oven trailer, which would be really cool. Reports I’ve read about it, though, make the trailer sound more like a warming bin for cooked pies.

Residents are enjoying the extensive renovations consisting of a state-of-the-art theater with surround-sound and real theater seats, the Black Horse Café – a bistro that offers casual dining and outdoor patio seating, a building expansion for a new activities room that opens up to a spacious outside patio surrounded by lovely landscaping and conservation land, a library with internet access and windows overlooking the Boston skyline, and a newly equipped wellness/rehabilitation area for physical and occupational therapy.

According to Pete Dabbeningo, Executive Director at The Gables, “After 20 years serving the community as a superb independent and assisted living retirement community, we were ready for a facelift. It’s spectacular – and it was worth the wait!”

The Gables’ new amenities and renovations, along with its large apartments each with a full kitchen, make it unique among the assisted living senior communities in the area.

“With grounds and building maintenance included at The Gables at Winchester, snow and bad weather are never a problem, making spending your retirement years in Massachusetts as enjoyable as anywhere,” said Joan Jerome-Conne, Sales Counselor.

Tours of the new amenities and model apartments are available seven days a week.

Renovations began in August 2010, and The Gables officially celebrated the completed renovations with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 17, 2011. Invited guests, residents and their family members, as well as staff, were treated to a spectacular champagne reception.

Tips for Choosing Safer Cookware from LiveESP.com

Stainless Steel Cookware

Plantation, FL (PRWEB) January 24, 2012

Essential Safe Products (ESP), a website dedicated to helping families make healthier and non-toxic changes in the kitchen and on the go, has put together a list of advantages and disadvantages of popular types of cookware to help consumers make safer and less-toxic choices when purchasing new pots and pans.

“There are so many different types of cookware out there it’s hard to know which type is the right kind to use in your kitchen. At ESP, choosing less toxic and safe cookware is a priority, and we hope our list can help families choose safer cookware that fits their lifestyle choices!” says Hannah Masimore, president of ESP.

What kind of cookware is the best? The answer, unfortunately, depends on several factors including what you like to cook, how you like to cook, priorities when cooking, and so on. However, if you’re looking for a type of cookware that has been found to be less reactive with ingredients and less-toxic, then stainless steel cookware or cast iron cookware may be the right choices for your home.

Below are some advantages and disadvantages of the most popular types of cookware available (thanks to some helpful tips from Health Canada):

1. Aluminum Cookware: While it is lightweight, inexpensive, and heats well, it does have several disadvantages. Its most prominent disadvantage is that during cooking, the aluminum may dissolve from the cookware and get absorbed by ingredients. Plus, the longer you use your aluminum cookware, the more likely your food will absorb the aluminum—especially when cooking leafy vegetables and acidic foods.

2. Anodized Aluminum Cookware: This type of cookware heats just as well as regular aluminum cookware, but it has the added benefit of a hard, non-stick surface to help block the aluminum from absorbing into food. Although it’s more difficult to damage the surface of anodized aluminum cookware than regular aluminum cookware, it does not mean the surface cannot be damaged. The amount of leaching is in small doses but over time this can add up.

3. Cast Iron Cookware: Iron is essential to producing red blood cells in the body. While large amounts may be poisonous, iron cookware only provides less than 20% of total daily iron intake, which is within safe levels. Many people don’t get enough iron rather than too much, so cast iron cookware can be a safer choice for your kitchen.

4. Ceramic Cookware: Ceramic cookware has the benefits of being easy to clean and heated to fairly high temperatures. However, the health concern with ceramic cookware is its glaze. This glaze may help resist wear and corrosion but can often contain traces of lead or cadmium. Both lead and cadmium are harmful chemicals when absorbed in the body. If choosing ceramic cookware, make sure the levels of lead and cadmium are within safety standards.

5. Copper Cookware: While small doses of copper are tolerable, large amounts can be poisonous. Copper cookware often has a coating to help prevent copper from getting into ingredients, but it is important to be mindful of the coating absorbing into the food as well. Because it is unclear as to the amount of copper considered safe to be consumed day, it is difficult to determine how safe copper cookware actually may be.

6. Non-Stick Cookware: Cookware with a non-stick/Teflon coating may make cooking a lot less sticky, but the chemical PFOA that leaches from the coating can cause a sticky situation. Studies have indicated that PFOA may be linked to several hazardous health issues, especially when young children are exposed.

7. Pottery: A lot of imported pottery contains high levels of lead, which can leach into your food when heated. To be on the safer side, ESP suggests using pottery mainly for decorative purposes.

8. Stainless Steel Cookware: Stainless steel cookware is lightweight, fairly inexpensive, easy to use, and considered one of the best and safest options for cookware. The chemicals found in stainless steel cookware include iron, nickel, and chromium. These chemicals only leach in small amounts, which do not cause enough harm to create concern. To help avoid these chemicals from leaching into your food, use a less abrasive method of cleaning to avoid scratching the cookware’s surface. Often times, cookware is made with an aluminum base or center and protected with a stainless steel outer layer. The aluminum allows for better heating and the stainless steel serves as a safer material that comes in contact with ingredients.

About Essential Safe Products (ESP)

Susan Masimore, mother of 6 children, started ESP because she wanted to spread the word about toxins and give families a place where they can confidently purchase non-toxic products for the kitchen and on-the-go. Through ESP’s website http://www.LiveESP.com, families can learn about the toxic chemicals, find tips and tricks on how to avoid exposure to toxins in food and drink, and purchase kitchen and on-the-go products that are non-toxic and food safe. ESP is dedicated to promoting healthy and non-toxic lifestyles for families as well as a healthy environment.

Address to a Haggis – Recipe Suggestions for Burns Night from GoodnessDirect

(PRWEB UK) 6 January 2012

Rabbie Burns declared it the “Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race”; GoodnessDirect would like to offer some tips on cooking his exalted dish: the haggis.

It is not too far-fetched to believe that the British have some fairly unique tastes in food. Watching from across the Atlantic, The New York Times acknowledges that Britain has “the world’s best candy” – a great complement for an average chocolate bar available from any British cornershop.1

In another edition it notes that the sea-faring nation has also pioneered the institution of marmalade on toast “around the globe”.2 And, over time, the journal has fielded many articles fascinated with the British love for fish and chips.3

But to fully appreciate why the humble haggis should be celebrated by so many as something of a national dish, it needs to be understood that puddings, whether savoury or sweet, have always been a staple of British society. “Pudding is an ancient British food,” The New York Times observes, “originating back in the medieval period.”4 The famous Christmas pudding was originally “fruits mixed with meat and wine and… spices.”

But it is the haggis which poet Rabbie Burns, declares to be the true prince among puddings.

“Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race!

Aboon them a’ ye tak your place”

(‘Address to a Haggis’, Robert Burns)

This Scottish delicacy is celebrated for its doubtful reputation yet surprisingly gamey flavour; with a taste similar to spicy, rich pate with a soft, nutty texture.

What many will not realise, however, is that there are countless ways to serve haggis on Burns Night (25th January). It really is truly versatile.

~ Recipe ideas for haggis ~

Most people south of the border know about the traditional serving of ‘neaps and tatties’. Their knowledge might even extend to the ‘Flying Scotsman’ (simply stuff chicken breasts with haggis, bake thee chicken wrapped in smoked bacon, and serve with a creamy alcoholic sauce). Yet there is more…

How about trying Haggis Balls in a Whisky and Mustard Sauce? Or Haggis Tartlets with Red Onion Marmalade? An adventurous chef could go continental with a Haggis Lasagne or explore the exotic by preparing Haggis Pakora. There’s also a stunning piece of mean cuisine in the Haggis Torta Salgada – a kind of Haggis soufflé-style pie.

So, if Burns night ever seems boring, it could be that a more creative meal is required. Creativity is, of course, what Burns Night is all about, and a plate of haggis should always entertain.

GoodnessDirect recommends beginning the evening meal by serving kipper pâté with oatcakes, then surprise everyone with the main course: presenting a masterpiece of haggis with a difference; ending with the grand finale of a creamy cranachan dessert. The guests will want to come again.

~ Cooking haggis is simple ~

The real great secret about haggis is that it’s so easy to cook. A Macsween’s haggis (available from [http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/brand/MACS.html GoodnessDirect] with next day delivery) can be steamed in just 6 minutes in the microwave. (Their vegetarian version takes 60 seconds!)

The result will be a cook who looks good in the kitchen but without all the extra bother.

For an evening built on the eloquence of Rabbie Burns and the speed of GoodnessDirect… “owe it all…” he wrote, “to their gratis grace and goodness”

Enjoy Burns Night.

Chino Hills Fitness Trainer Offers Advice for Losing Weight in the New Year

Chino, California (PRWEB) January 18, 2012

According to the annual FranklinCovey Co. New Year’s Resolutions Survey, the most popular goals for 2012 are: (1) To become more physically fit; (2) To improve one’s financial condition; (3) To improve health, and (4) To lose weight. Chino Hills Fitness Trainer Sam Bakhtiar runs the highest-grossing local boot camp and would like to offer his tips for losing weight (and keeping it off) in the New Year.

1.    Weight loss starts in the kitchen.

Sam Says: “Diet is everything. If you’re serious about losing weight in 2012, you need to target the two or more inches of flab covering up your rock-solid abs. I plan out every meal I eat – breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks – so I’m less tempted to grab a Big Mac when there’s no food in the house or when a craving strikes me.”

2.    Don’t let genetics get you down.

Sam Says: “Look, I have the worst possible body type there is – a slim ectomorph upper, a muscular mesomorph lower, with a little bit of pot-belly endomorph in the middle. I wasn’t born with a genetic predisposition to bodybuilding by any stretch of the imagination, but through hard work, I achieved the look I wanted. So can you!”

3.    Focus on lean protein.

Sam Says: “A few subtle changes can do a lot for your diet. Instead of eating hearty meatloaves and pork chops for dinner, switch to lean protein sources like fish, skinless chicken, turkey, cottage cheese, egg whites, and tofu. You can even have a nice lean steak every now and then too.”

4.    Eat carbs, but make sure they’re low on the Glycemic Index.

Sam Says: “Many diets have made carbohydrates into the villain, but I eat carbs every day because many carbs possess nutrients that are essential for fat metabolism and weight loss. Remember, fruits like raspberries, blackberries and apples are carbs. Brown rice, whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta are all okay in moderation.

5.    Workout for an hour at least three times a week.

Sam Says: “Exercise is the other half of the equation. Some people think working out ‘when they have time’ is better than nothing. Other people think if they run on the treadmill or elliptical machine for an hour all week long, they’ll automatically lose weight. This often works at first, but then they hit a plateau. What you need is a consistent training program that combines metabolic resistance training, interval training and cardio. That is precisely what my Chino Hills Weight Loss program entails, so stop by and see me! I’d love to help you realize your goals in 2012.”

Sam Bakhtiar’s Chino Hills fitness program runs for an hour, three days a week, with flexible schedules from 5 to 10 AM and 4 to 7 PM, as well as two Saturday morning classes. New members receive a free nutrition and goal setting meeting with a personal trainer. The workouts follow a boot camp style format, with obstacle courses, lunges, squats, push-ups, and other dynamic sets of easy-to-follow exercises.

Summit Medical Group CEO Sleeps on Sidewalk to Help Save a Corner of the World

Participants in the Covenant House Solidarity Sleepout got a taste of what it might be like to be homeless in New York City.

Berkeley Heights, NJ (PRWEB) December 07, 2011

Simon J. Samaha, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of Summit Medical Group, spent the night of November 17, 2011, on a cardboard box on a Hell’s Kitchen, New York City sidewalk. With temperatures hovering near the freezing mark, Dr. Samaha joined 50 influential business leaders from the New York metropolitan area for the first-ever Covenant House CEO Solidarity Sleepout in support of the city’s homeless youth.

Earlier that evening Natalie Grant, Gospel Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year, kicked off an inspirational candlelight vigil ceremony at Military Island in Times Square. Dr. Samaha and business leaders from the New York Yankees, the National Basketball Association, Thomson Reuters, Oxygen Network, and Zelnick Media, among many others, then braced for a cold night outside Covenant House on 41st Street, just blocks from the Lincoln Tunnel and Port Authority Bus Terminal.

In a pre-event news release, Covenant House President Kevin Ryan noted, “These leaders have selflessly decided they want to walk in our kids’ shoes and experience, if only for one night, some of what our kids go through.”

For 40 years, Covenant House has provided 24/7 crisis care and on-going support for homeless young people in need of a safe haven. The Crisis Center at 460 West 41st St. feeds and shelters approximately 2,000 kids every night. Incorporated in New York City in 1972, it has since expanded to 21 locations in the United States, Canada, and Latin America.

“A night of sleeping on the streets of New York pales in comparison to with what homeless children deal with every day,” said Dr. Samaha. “The Sleepout offers participants some understanding of what it must be like for these kids and helps spread awareness about what Covenant House does to help them.”

The CEO Solidarity Sleepout raised more than $ 400,000 to support programs at Covenant House. Visit http://www.covenanthouse.org and http://www.ceosleep.org. for more information.
